The Power of Light

Remember to radiate light when you are surrounded by darkness

By Wallace Huey

Painters are drawn to the west of Ireland because of its light. Oftentimes I have seen sunlight break through a few precious gaps in the pervasive blanket of cloud to send rays that light up the Atlantic Ocean and I respond with a huge beaming smile that in turn brightens my face.

I have always been greatly moved by such a sight. The pervasive darkness of the cloud. The vast greyness of the ocean. Then suddenly a burst of light, made all the more majestic when set against the all pervasive grey.

Ireland is known for its 40 shades of green, but standing on the west coast overlooking the ocean that surrounds our island, it's often 40 shades of grey - a monochromatic seascape that serves as a perfect foil to the sunlight when it occasionally breaks through.

The power of light, both as a wonder of the natural world and as a potent symbol of inner transformation, is unrivalled. Light and dark are the ultimate polarities and are redolent of our positive and negative behaviours - and the constancy of the light shining from ordinary people that is transforming our world.

So why is light such a potent symbol of higher consciousness?

  • Firstly the enlightened person uses light to extinguish the darkness. The light of truth, extinguishes falsehood. And the light of awareness does away with ignorance.
  • Secondly light radiates outward from a single point, like the sun, a candle or a lighthouse. As a power that radiates outward from its source it is a potent image of the enlightened person, whose wisdom radiates from his personhood and travels throughout society.
  • And thirdly, light can be reflected, but it cannot be easily bent. Just as an enlightened person reflects the idiosyncrasies and misdemeanours of those around him, so that they might see and understand their negative behaviours, but does not seek to bend them to his will.

Therefore next time you rise at dawn and step out into the birth of a new day, remember what you can learn from light. Reflect for a moment on the power of the light to dispel the darkness and remember that as human beings we all carry this light. Remember too that each of us can draw apart the curtain of our heart and radiate our own light into the world as a powerful source of healing.

And then also remember, no matter how dark or forbidding the night, the light always shines through at dawn.

There has never been a time in human history when the need for each of us to shine our light has become more necessary or more urgent.
