What Is Enlightenment?
Enlightenment is a concept created in the mind. Of course it is not enlightened to limit oneself, therefore enlightenment also exists in the realm of the unlimited, beyond all concepts.
How Can You Tell If Someone is Enlightened?
If you met an enlightened person on the street you could not tell that they were enlightened. They look ordinary. They do not come across as weird in any way. But you could tell they were enlightened as you got to know them.
An enlightened person has far fewer needs than everyone else. They only have physiological and safety needs for air, water, food, health and for safety and shelter. These are on the two bottom levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. His higher needs are met by his life of service to the world.

Enlightenment is Not a Goal
What would have happened to us as a baby if we had stopped the urge to walk after we fell down for the third time. We would have spent our whole life crawling! Yet that is what most people do with the urge to enlightenment. They crawl along, then they ask, how can I attain enlightenment?
Enlightenment is About Love
What is the experience of enlightenment? For some it’s about bliss. For others it’s about depression. For yet others it’s about love. All of these are true and can be experienced at different times by different people on their journey into enlightenment. So let’s look at each of these in turn.
You Come to Enlightenment Through Failure
You don’t have to perform, improve, succeed, serve, analyse, plan, scheme, dedicate, search, or engage in any activity whatever, either within yourself, or in the world. You are. That’s it.
There is No Death, There is Only Life - Full On
What if death didn’t exist? What if it was your ideas about your self that can die, but you are eternal. To move beyond self we need to transcend from the known to the unknown, from certainty to uncertainty and from past and future to here and now.
The Greatest Achievement is to Do Nothing
The journey from awakening to enlightenment involves being present to and letting go of our remaining compulsions. To lead a life completely free (of compulsion) is the enlightened state. In the enlightened state we are not so much caught up in the process, as we are the process.
Enlightenment Never Happens to an Individual
Many people wonder how enlightenment can be approached and realised. There are three final stages to enlightenment that involve a fundamental disconnect with our ego.
You Know You’ve Arrived When Everyone Ignores You!
When you arrive at the mountain top of consciousness you know, because everyone ignores you. With the possible exception of one or two friends who “get you” everybody else keeps their distance. Why is this?
To be Enlightened is to Be Totally Used Up!
To be enlightened is to live from Presence. And Presence is where you come to when all else that is within you has dissolved.
Enlightenment is Ordinary
With practice, and especially with the assistance of a spiritual awakening, the observer self becomes constant and gives birth to awareness and to living in presence.
Enlightenment - Everything is A-OK
When there is A-OK acceptance the mind is still and the heart expands to embrace the other and the situation. There is no trace of Ego.
Exuberance
When I was a young man, my favourite sport was hang gliding. Then years later I realised why I liked hang gliding so much. Hang gliding was a metaphor. As a sport it contained all the qualities I wanted to nurture in myself.
